When welding plastics with ultrasonic technology, the strength of finished products can be close to that of the raw materials themselves.

The quality of welding results depends on three core factors: transducer amplitude, welding pressure and welding time. Among them, pressure and time are flexibly adjustable, while amplitude is determined by the transducer and horn. These three factors must reach a balanced value: excessive energy tends to cause product deformation, while insufficient energy leads to poor welding strength, and the applied pressure also needs to be controlled within a reasonable range.

Raw material compatibility is a key prerequisite for ultrasonic welding, which mainly depends on the polymer structure, melting temperature, hardness and chemical structure of the resin, among which the polymer structure has the most significant impact:

一、Thermoplastic materials: They can be softened again after being heated and molded, making them suitable for ultrasonic welding, and are further divided into two categories:

  • Amorphous polymers: Their molecular arrangement is disordered with a clear glass transition temperature (Tg). They can efficiently transmit ultrasonic vibrations and achieve high-quality welding within a wide range of pressure and amplitude.
  • Semi-crystalline polymers: Their molecular arrangement is ordered with fixed melting points (Tm) and solidification points. Due to their elasticity, they will absorb high-frequency vibration energy, making it difficult to conduct energy to the pressing surface and resulting in high welding difficulty.

二、Thermosetting materials: They cannot be softened again after molding and are not suitable for ultrasonic welding processes.
